CRAFTSMANSHIP

STONEWORK

Stonework lies at the heart of traditional conservation. From lime mortar pointing to precise masonry repairs, our craftsmen restore stone buildings with deep respect for their original structure and materials. Using time-honoured techniques, we repair, carve, and stabilise stone features to ensure they last for generations to come.

JOINERY

Joinery is where structure meets craftsmanship. Whether it’s repairing centuries-old oak beams, reinstating period doors, or crafting bespoke windows, our joiners work with precision and care. We use seasoned timbers and traditional methods to preserve the character and strength of each building we touch.

LEADWORK

Leadwork plays a vital role in protecting historic buildings from the elements. Our skilled team restores and replaces lead flashing, gutters, and roof details using traditional tools and techniques. Each installation is carried out with care, ensuring watertight protection and visual harmony with the original architecture.

LIME PLASTERING

Lime plastering embodies the enduring art of traditional wall finishes. Our craftsmen apply this breathable, natural material with care and precision, using time-honoured methods passed down through generations. From restoring heritage interiors to conserving historic façades, each application is tailored to preserve the integrity, texture, and character of the original surface.

METALWORK

Metalwork plays a vital role in the conservation of historic buildings, particularly when it comes to architectural hardware and bespoke ironwork. Working alongside specialist blacksmiths, MCL faithfully reproduces period fixtures in hand-forged wrought iron, using traditional techniques that echo those of the original makers.

BRICKWORK

Brickwork is an essential element of historic building conservation, requiring both technical skill and an appreciation for original materials and methods. MCL’s experienced bricklayers take a sympathetic and professional approach to every repair, understanding the responsibility that comes with working on structures of heritage significance.

JOS TORC® CLEANING

MCL offers specialist cleaning of historic and contemporary masonry using the Jos Torc® system — a method widely recognised by conservation professionals for its gentle effectiveness. This low-pressure, vortex-based technique uses a fine, inert powder to clean surfaces without damaging the underlying material, making it ideal for listed buildings and delicate architectural features.

Our trained operatives have extensive experience using the Jos Torc® system to remove carbon deposits, pollution staining, biological growth, and embedded dirt from materials such as brick, stone, marble, wood, and concrete. It is especially effective on intricate mouldings and carved surfaces where care and control are paramount.

By combining expert handling with the right technology, we ensure surfaces are cleaned sympathetically, safely, and to conservation standards.

DOFF® CLEANING

As a complement to the Jos Torc® system, MCL also employs the DOFF® cleaning method — a specialist solution widely used for the careful cleaning of listed buildings and sensitive surfaces. The system uses a unique combination of high-temperature steam and low pressure, making it ideal for removing more stubborn residues while preserving the integrity of the underlying material.

Our trained operatives use the DOFF® system to effectively remove oil, grease, paint, bitumen, and biological growth from stone, brick, and other historic surfaces. Unlike traditional pressure washers, the DOFF® system avoids saturation or surface erosion, ensuring a sympathetic, conservation-grade clean.

Together with Jos Torc®, the DOFF® system allows us to tailor our approach to suit the unique condition and needs of each structure.

GLAZING

MCL provides specialist glazing services for historic and traditional properties, using time-honoured methods and materials to restore or recreate leaded lights with both authenticity and durability. Whether repairing original windows or producing new ones to match a specific period, our work balances historical accuracy with long-term performance.

Cracked panes, loose glass, and weakened lead cames are carefully repaired using matching glass and internal strengthening bars, ensuring stability without compromising the appearance. For new leaded lights, we source glass that emulates the character of the chosen era.

Where external strengthening bars are rusting — a common issue affecting surrounding stonework — we replace them with lead-covered mild steel, stainless steel, or phosphor bronze for a low-maintenance alternative. If conservation is the priority, original bars are removed, refurbished, and returned using conservation-led techniques such as lead dipping or stainless steel end welding

PAINTING & DECORATING

Painting and decorating play a vital role in the final presentation and long-term preservation of historic buildings. MCL’s skilled decorators carry out a wide range of internal and external finishes — from small detail work to full-scale redecoration of churches, heritage buildings, and period properties.

Our team is experienced in applying traditional materials, including lime washes and mineral paints, ensuring that every finish is breathable, appropriate for the substrate, and in keeping with the building’s character. Whether working on fine architectural detailing or large surface areas, our approach is both sympathetic and durable — combining aesthetic integrity with technical know-how.
