Warwick Castle – Domestic Range, East Chapel

Location: Warwickshire

In summer 2025, Midland Conservation Ltd completed a phase of works on the external elevations of the Grade I listed Domestic Range, East Chapel, at Warwick Castle. Located within the environs of the Scheduled Monument castle walls, the project focused on preserving the fabric of this historic structure through careful repair and replacement works.

Key Works:

  • Masonry repairs to cornice, string courses, window surrounds, and related elements
  • Replacement of sand-cast lead roof covering to the lower roof
  • Repairs to lead rainwater goods
  • Associated miscellaneous external repairs

Wollaton Hall & Deer Park, Nottingham

Scope of Work:

Midland Conservation Ltd undertook a series of works across Phases 1, 2, and 3 at Wollaton Hall, a Grade I listed Elizabethan mansion set within historic deer parkland. The project addressed both urgent repairs caused by water ingress and wider conservation works to preserve the hall’s significant fabric.

  • Enhancement of rainwater collection and discharge from tower roofs

  • Redecoration of the Tudor kitchen

Betley Court, Crewe

Scope of Work:

Following the devastating fire that ripped through Betley Court, Midland Conservation Ltd were appointed to carry out a complete programme of reinstatement, alteration, and conservation works to both the external and internal historic fabric. The project demanded a careful balance of structural repair and heritage sensitivity to restore stability and safeguard the building’s future.

Key Works:

  • Repair of structural masonry walls and reformation of the roof structure and coverings
  • Installation of new rainwater goods
  • Consolidation and repair of existing masonry, including new concrete lintels
  • Installation of structural roof timbers and contractor-designed steelwork
  • Replacement of softwood floor joists with temporary plywood decking
  • New substrate to flat roof, finished with Welsh slates (diminishing and non-diminishing courses)
  • Leadwork to flat roof and flashings
  • Installation of Velux rooflight and roof lantern
  • Lightning protection system
  • Repairs to timber cornices and eaves
  • Cast iron rainwater goods

Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire

Scope of Work:

Midland Conservation Ltd have been appointed to deliver a £1.1 million repair project at Hardwick Hall, a Grade I listed Elizabethan country house built between 1590 and 1597 for Bess of Hardwick (Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury). The project forms part of the ongoing conservation of this nationally significant estate, ensuring the building’s heritage is safeguarded for future generations.

Key Works:

  • Masonry repairs to the north elevations
  • Re-roofing of the out-wing with new sand-cast lead roof covering

Croome Court, Worcestershire

Scope of Work:
Croome Court, a striking Neo-Palladian estate and former seat of the Earls of Coventry, has seen many chapters — from RAF base to school, country club, and spiritual centre. In 2007, the Croome Heritage Trust acquired the house and leased it to the National Trust, initiating significant conservation efforts.

Midland Conservation was commissioned to restore the west side of the north entrance steps, carefully matching historic profiles and ensuring minimal disruption to public access during the works.

Key Works:

  • Replaced previous concrete repairs using Hartham Park Bath stone

  • Restoration of balusters, piers, plinths, and coping stones to original stonework profiles

  • Repair and re-pointing of retained stone using lime mortar

  • Replacement of broken paving

  • Restoration completed under winter conditions, with continued public access maintained

  • Additional commission to restore the east side of the steps following successful delivery
